"Cecile Johnson?" the stewardess asks. "Are you these colored girls' momma?" Eleven-year-old Delphine doesn't expect much when she and her two younger sisters fly across the country to spend the summer of 1968 with their tall, mysterious poet mother who abandoned the family years ago. Cecile sends them to a day camp run by the Black Panthers-even though she doesn't seem to support "the cause"-and remains distant when they are together. However, as time passes, Delphine and her sisters make surprising discoveries about their mother and themselves.
