written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter
The Kenya of Wangari’s childhood was a place of green trees, forest birds, and plentiful crops. However, when Wangari returned from studying abroad, barren land greeted her. There were no trees, no crops, and no birds. She decided to plant nine seedlings in her backyard. Soon, the village women were planting trees, too, and as word spread, so were women in other parts of Kenya. Wangari Maathaiwas awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to world peace through the Green Belt Movement. Author’s note. Full-color acrylic illustrations.
