written and illustrated by Deborah Kogan Ray
“I can’t help it that I’ve got to draw and paint forever; I cannot stop. . . .” Born in Minnesota in 1893, Wanda Gág drew from a young age. When her father died, teenaged Wanda supported her mother and six younger siblings by selling handmade cards and submitting stories to magazines. When she was finally able to devote herself to her art, she attended art school and moved to New York City. At a 1928 exhibition of her work, an editor suggested that she write for children. Author’s notes. Bibliography. Photo of Wanda Gág. Full-color paintings.
