In 1899, just before her twelfth birthday, Callie Tate decides she wants to read Darwin's The Origin of Species. Unfortunately, the library near her hometown of Fentress, Texas, doesn't own it. To Callie's surprise, her formidable, taciturn grandfather offers her his copy of the book. Even more surprising, Grandfather and Callie grow close thanks to their mutual interest in nature. The more Callie learns from her grandfather and from her own observations, the more she wants to be a scientist. But Callie's mother insists that she spend less time exploring and investigating, and more time learning to be a lady. A 2010 Newbery Honor Book. A 2010 ALA Notable Children's Book.
