This introduction to hieroglyphs opens by describing the discovery of the Rosetta stone by French soldiers in Egypt and how they hoped it would help them decipher the “picture writing” they had seen on temples. Subsequent chapters explain what hieroglyphs are, their history, how they were originally decoded, and how readers can write their own. Difficult words are defined at the bottom of the pages and in a glossary, and text boxes offer intriguing asides. The hieroglyphic-inspired design is a nice complement to the photos and reproductions. A time line covers “Hieroglyphs Through Time,” and a reading list, link to additional Web sites, and an index conclude.
