Over 80 years of editorial excellence
Junior Library Guild (JLG) began in 1929 as the Junior Literary Guild, a children’s version of the popular adult book club, the Literary Guild. Helen Ferris, an early editor in chief, enlisted the aid of friend Eleanor Roosevelt as a member of the editorial board to help guide the new venture. Roosevelt served actively on the board from 1929 until her death in 1962. She often mentioned the Junior Literary Guild and its efforts to bring the best books to children in her daily syndicated newspaper column, My Day.
By mid-century our mix of customers had shifted more and more toward libraries. To reflect that change, and to show our dedication to our member libraries, we changed our name in 1988 to Junior Library Guild.
In January 2009 Media Source Inc., now the parent company of Junior Library Guild, acquired The Horn Book Magazine and The Horn Book Guide. Early in 2010 year Media Source expanded to include Library Journal and School Library Journal. We’ve grown and adapted, but one thing has remained constant for over 80 years: our unwavering commitment to editorial excellence. You can count on Junior Library Guild to provide your library with books destined to become beloved and enduring classics — and likely to earn favorable reviews and awards along the way.
Today JLG proudly offers 41 different Reading and Series Nonfiction Levels to meet the needs of young readers from prekindergarten through mature young adult. Our selections feature only the best and most worthwhile titles chosen to engage young minds and foster a love of books and reading.
