A Day in Denver with Avi

Elementary winners

Denver Public Schools hosted an amazing vendor fair at the Denver Merchandise Mart. Charlie Leckenby put together a great event that was well attended by the librarians in the district. I was on hand to bring attendees a booktalk on some of our latest books, and I was fortunate to have Newbery-winning author Avi with me as a guest speaker.

His new book, Sophia’s War, is a JLG pick for the month of January. Along with being selected by JLG, the book has received many starred and favorable reviews. Personally, I loved reading every page; the book is chock full of historically accurate details about the Revolutionary War. Avi spoke with us about his research for the book including some details he couldn’t work in–one in particular about a woman spy who hung her laundry as a kind of signal flag to communicate with the American army! He read an excerpt from the book and took questions from the audience. We all learned a lot more about the war that gained America her freedom.

Secondary winners

Simon and Schuster was kind enough to grant us permission to bring a few copies of Avi’s new book Sophia’s War prior to release date to give away.  He is pictured here with the lucky winners from our elementary session and from the secondary session.
