Tech Thursday: 101+ (Mostly Free) Online Resources

By: Deborah B. Ford | May 05, 2016 | Shelf Life

As I was polishing my presentations for NHSLMA (New Hampshire School Library Media Association) annual conference in Concord, NH this week, I found a theme: they are all technology. I'm doing the ever-popular Using Social Media to Market Your Library, Using Technology in Your Library, and Online Resources. I made a few changes to the social media session and then began to work on the other two. Enter heart-stopping moment. You know the website I wrote you've been using forever? 101 Best Web Resources? The company that hosted it pulled the plug in March. I knew it was coming. I had a year to regroup. Now the time had come to make a new plan. What to do? jlg_livebinder (60x60) (2)Knowing it needed to be easy to get to, easy to update, and quick to create, I chose LiveBinder. I took my old 101 Web Resources workshop as a guide and created tabs: Content Resources, Nonfiction Resources, Collaboration, Time and Money Savers, Digital Tools, and Worth the Money. It's called 101+ (Mostly Free) Online Resources for Educators. I've since added a new tab called What's New? I'll copy blog posts from JLG as I add new resources, so you'll be able to quickly find what's new. Then I gave it an easy name using ( Now it's easy for people to find it and by using I'll get statistics about the number of people who use it. Tech tip: Keep and report your statistics to stakeholders. It's also good to know what you're doing is being used. LiveBinder, as you may know, allows you create online notebooks, adding files, websites, videos, and graphics to your work. Like Pinterest, you can add while you work, making it easy to update. It's also easy to share via social media, embedded links, and email. Now I have a tool that I can use in my teaching. I hope you'll use it too. When you find resources that you think I should include, let me know. Watch our website for updates on Tech Tuesdays or Thursdays. You can also click the tag technology for multiple posts. Now I have my handouts ready. My website's ready. All I have to do is pack! If you're at the NHSLMA conference, come and see me. I'll be at the booth in addition to teaching 3 sessions. If you can't make it, you know where to find the resources.
