Graphic novels continue to grow in popularity with young readers. It’s one of our most popular categories, and they tend to fly off our shelves!
What’s so powerful about graphic novels is the unique way the visuals and the storytelling work together. Often, the story is driven by the artwork as much as the narration or dialog. Graphic novels, in fact, have much in common with film and television in that way.
At the same time, it is a distinct medium because each panel illustrates a single moment in time, which is different from the visual storytelling of film and television. So the choice of which moments to illustrate and how to pair them with the dialog and narration makes for a powerful and unique reading experience.
In addition, graphic novels are often a compelling tool to help reluctant readers develop an interest in reading.
Given the popularity of the medium, we’re happy to see several of our graphic novel selections included in the Washington Post’s list of the 10 Best Graphic Novels of 2018.
