Miranda, who lives an isolated life with Wysteria, an elderly widow, recollects little about the time before she arrived at Bourne Manor. Blown there by the wind and pulled from a tree by Wysteria's wolfhounds, Miranda says, "I was lost and Wysteria found me. Or perhaps the Manor itself found me, beckoning me to its gates." The Manor is a mysterious, menacing place, and Miranda is kept inside its locked doors. Then one day a boy named Farley appears and inspires Miranda to discover a destiny beyond Wysteria and Bourne Manor.
