“A 3D printer is kind of like a hot glue gun that puts out material in the shape that a computer describes.” A solid overview for tech-savvy kids, this book explains how 3D printers work, how they are being used, and the software needed to build a 3D object from the ground up. It opens with two safety notes (one for adults, one for kids). Although there are no specific projects (in fact, the text reminds readers that this volume is an introduction, and they should also read other sources), kids are encouraged to use their imaginations to design and build their own printed works. In addition, there is a chapter devoted to Web sites where students can create their own designs. Captioned screenshots and photographs provide helpful references. Occasional text boxes include supplemental information, such as basic safety information and a feature on Thingiverse, a design-and-share Web resource. While 3D printers are not yet accessible to everyone, the final chapter provides a list of places and resources where 3D printers can be found. Back matter consists of a glossary, books and Web sites for further research, and an index.
