Rapunzel 's Revenge

by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale

Illustrations by Nathan Hale

Rapunzel is raised in a grand villa surrounded by towering walls. Gothel, the woman she calls Mother, dismisses her recurring dreams about a different, loving mother, but when Rapunzel climbs over the wall she finds out the truth. Her real mother, Kate, is a slave in Gothel's gold mine, and Gothel's power extends over a barren landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. In this Old West retelling, Rapunzel doesn't let down her hair to a prince; she uses it as a lasso and to take on outlaws-including Gothel. Fullcolor graphic novel.

    Author/Illustrator Biographies

Shannon Hale and Dean Hale are working together on a series of graphic novels, the first of which is Rapunzel 's Revenge.

Regarding her interest in writing fantasy books, Mrs. Hale says in an interview with www.authorlink.com, "When I was a kid, I got a bored with books like Mandy Moves to a New Town unless it was Mandy Moves Objects with her Mind! I was thinking, 'Yeah, yeah, girl gets her period and is embarrassed, but doesn 't anyone have ESP? ' I 've never grown out of my love of fantasy --good fantasy. I 'm not sure why. Maybe I should ask a therapist. "

She continues, "My hope always is to write a book that is a story about real people and that even readers who say 'I don 't read fantasy ' will enjoy. I feel like my characters grow organically, though I certainly employ my fair share of authorial manipulation. Initially, I have a vague idea of them, and then I start writing to discover more, because I believe a character is what she does. I need to see what she says and does before I know her fully. My characters develop tremendously in rewrites --you might not recognize some of them in my first drafts. When I feel uncertain about one character, I write a scene between her and another that I know well. "

Ms. Hale is the author of several books for young readers, including Princess Academy, a Newbery Honor Book, and Book of a Thousand Days, a Junior Library Guild selection and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Rapunzel 's Revenge is Mr. Hale 's first book. The two are married and live in Salt Lake City, Utah, with their two children.

Nathan Hale worked as a scientific illustrator before focusing on picture books, and he has helped create murals and dioramas in natural history museums across the United States. A screenplay based on his picture book The Devil You Know was recently optioned by Fox Motion Pictures. He lives in Utah with his wife and two children. Rapunzel 's Revenge is his first graphic novel and his first JLG selection. He is not related to Shannon and Dean Hale.
