I really enjoyed the webcast last week. Mr. Alexander was outstanding. I read two of his books: Booked and The Crossover. (these were great reads The amazing thing is that I could identify with these books as a sport's mom. I am the mother of two boys that played sports (pop warner football, middle school-basketball/ football and high school-basketball and track. My husband was Coached basketball and baseball. I wish these books were available back then for the boys to read.. I am happy to spread good information about his writing style and good works. I plan to read more of his books. Thank you for allowing me to be apart of webcast. However, I do need information on how to obtain the certificate for listening.

    on Thu, Oct 01, 2015 at 17:50pm

Hi Deborah, Thanks for addressing this issue. I have found, in my limited 10 years experience as a Library Media Specialist, that students just want to go to the computer to find the answer. This is why I begin with the youngest students (first grade) and gather information from print resources before we even go to the computer. When there, we use vetted sites such as Pebble Go, National Geographic or our on-line encyclopedia before anyone can go into the Internet. I believe that children should learn that print resources are the beginning of research and on line resources are the extension and verification of print.

    on Mon, Aug 10, 2015 at 16:50pm

Hi Deb, I don't believe in coincidence, but when I happened on this article I was going to ask you this question: I am planning to return to being a school media specialist. I did it for 6 years and want to get back into it after being a ref. and catalog librarian. I was going to ask what do I do to get back in. Your following response had already answered the question. I believe it was divine intervention. Thanks. Maybe this year you’re in a new library. You don’t know the staff, the collection, or your patrons. You can’t do what’s “always been done” because you don’t even know what that is. My advice to you is to watch, learn, and absorb. Don’t try to change the world before you know what it is. Make friends with your new colleagues. Don’t expect to understand everything right away. Keep your chin up and your shoulders back. When it gets hard, get a pedicure, and let it go.

Many things you wrote about are exactly how I am managing my audiobooks. I have found that shelving them separately and with the print version allows for great success with my students. My ELD and struggling readers really like them and that's who I was targeting when I bought them. Thanks for the validation.

I have metal vases filled with paint sticks (for stirring paint) on the tops of lower shelves. Kids get one, touch "the back of the book, the back of the book, the back of the book." If they don't want the book they return it so the stick is touching the back of the book. If they remove the stick and change their mind, they put the book flat on top of a shelf. Works great for little kids and big kids in a rush.

It depends on the purpose of your blog. Is it a personal reflection? Will it help other teachers? Are your kids going to write it? Check out http://edublogs.org/ for ideas. Remember that if you don't give anyone the URL (via email or social media) you might as well not have one. So many blogs equals practically unsearchable without marketing.

I am wondering the same thing as Patricia Siemens. Will the book selections be available online so that out-of-staters can purchase books from the warehouse sale?? Thank you!

Is there a copy of the backlist available anywhere? I thought it was in years past but I cannot find it on this new fancy site.

I'm not sure if Taylor Elementary is a member of the JLG... Please let me know what we need to do? The cost, etc. Please email the information, as I will be in classes. Thank you Michelle

I will not be able to travel to Ohio for the book sale. Is there a way that we could order from your selection and have it mailed? Thanks Pat Siemens

Way to again Leslie B! (The B stands for 'Book Talk'). I am excited to be back!

I agree with you. What makes this funny for me is that our school has been implementing the Fish Philosophy for 4 years as part of our discipline incentive program. When I saw this picture, I had to laugh. My library is not quiet - it is an active place of learning.
