One broken suitcase later (the wheel literally fell off), I'm back in the office after another amazing NSTA Regional Conference. Philadelphia offered much of what it often does in November--a nip in the air, street musicians, and a plethora of food choices in the Reading Terminal Market. For my last trip of the month, I went out of the box and spoke at the National Science Teachers Association Regional Conference in Reno. I was slated to present Bridging the Content Gap with Nonfiction, a new session I just wrote. I promised to talk about new nonfiction (I chose 30 titles), free resources for teaching, additional free information text resources, and technology to bring it all together. In an hour. Um. Yeah. While I was getting dressed, two thoughts came into my head: 1) Don't let my new grandbaby come while I'm gone and 2) Let someone show up for the session. So. What happened on Saturday morning?

I used my first LEGOs at the SLJ Summit last October. Yep. First time. Though I've stepped on quite a few and marveled at the larger-than-life creations at Downtown Disney, I've never made anything. Stephen Turnipseed, President Emeritus of LEGO Education, North America, gave a rousing keynote speech at the 2014 Summit. "Creativity will become the most marketable skill set in the future." We made ducks with LEGOs. All of us. And get this: they were all different. With the exact same blocks (4 yellow and 2 red), we all made different ducks and none were wrong.
