A 2009 NCTE Orbis Pictus Recommended Book. In 1871, a five-year-old Yavapai boy named Wassaja was kidnapped by Pima warriors who planned to sell him into slavery. An Italian photographer, Carlo Gentile, paid thirty silver dollars to Wassaja's captors and raised the boy, whom he named Carlos Montezuma, as his son. This is the story of how Carlos grew up to become a distinguished physician and Native American activist. The text is based on a letter Dr. Montezuma wrote at the request of the Smithsonian Institution. Note on Montezuma's activist work. Bibliography. Illustrated with fullcolor drawings and Carlo Gentile's sepia-toned photographs.
