During the American Library Association's Children's Day/Book Day, kids celebrate by reading with their friends and family. "We read libros together in cars and planes and trains. / Leemos libros juntos en autos, aviones, y trenes." Inspired by books, kids' imaginations take them on fantastic adventures: they travel through the jungle on the back of an elephant, deep underwater in a submarine, and in a hot-air balloon with a giraffe. Author's note. Ideas for celebrating Children's Day/Book Day. Full-color illustrations. Winner of the 2010 Pura Belpré Award. A 2010 Mildred L. Batchelder Honor Book. A 2010 ALA Notable Children's Book.

Appropriately titled, Book Fiesta! is an exuberant celebration of reading—and kids aren’t the only ones invited to the party. In a series of charming and whimsical tableaus, parents read to their children as they spend an evening together on the lake; a menagerie of animals—from a happy burro to a nervous elephant to an intrepid, eye patch-wearing dog—joins the children on their adventures.

Illustrator Rafael López creates cheery, colorful landscapes that invite repeat viewings. In one scene, he captures the excitement of a trip to the library as a group of children race each other to the entrance, while others sit by themselves, engrossed in their books. In a more fanciful illustration on the concluding pages, children hold on to their books as they are lifted toward a slumbering moon. Scenes such as these will remind kids of the voyages they’ve taken in their own imaginations—and the stories that inspired those adventures.

Author Pat Mora is the founder of Children’s Day/Book Day, and in a section that follows the story, she offers helpful suggestions for teachers and parents who are eager to organize their own fiestas. This delightful book could certainly help get them started.

Horn Book

This volume extends the Mexican celebration of El día de los niños (The Day of the Child) by adding books to the mix (El día de los libros). Mora's rhymed text extols reading anywhere, anytime, and together with anyone. López's rich-hued images of children reading in unexpected places (e.g., an elephant's back) and exotic locales rejoice in imagination and universality.
