Lindsay Moore, the acclaimed author-illustrator of Sea Bear, chronicles the remarkable true story of Yoshi, a loggerhead sea turtle who traveled an astounding 25,000 miles after being released from the aquarium that rehabilitated her. Equal parts informational and awe-inspiring, Yoshi and the Ocean is a gorgeous picture book about patience, perseverance, the ocean, and finding your way home.

In 1997, a young loggerhead sea turtle was rescued from the ocean after an injury to her shell. The fishermen who rescued her named her Yoshi and took her to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa. She was rehabilitated there and grew stronger—and larger!—every day. She also became one of the most popular exhibits at the aquarium. After twenty years in captivity, Yoshi was released back into the ocean and traveled more than 25,000 miles in 1,003 days to find her way home. A tracking device on her shell transmitted data about her journey to marine biologists and turtle enthusiasts of all ages around the world.

Like Lindsay Moore’s acclaimed debut Sea Bear, Yoshi and the Ocean is a transformative story about the incredible journeys animals may make, and about the interconnectedness of the natural world. Lindsay Moore’s gorgeous watercolor paintings enrich her moving, lyrical, and informative text. This picture book touches on topics such as conservation, oceanography, natural selection, the food chain, currents, geography, making Yoshi and the Ocean an ideal choice for parents, teachers, librarians, and anyone interested in nature and the ocean. Includes a map of Yoshi’s journey, information about sea turtles and how you can help them, and additional resources.

“Yoshi’s Journey,” with map. Information about loggerhead sea turtles. Suggestions for further information. Bibliography and resources. Full-color illustrations were rendered in graphite, watercolor, drawing inks, conté crayon, and color pencils.

Gr 2-4-Yoshi is a young, injured sea turtle found by Japanese fishermen more than twenty years ago. They name her Yoshitaro, care for her, and then transfer her to an aquarium in Cape Town. She is the first turtle to live at the aquarium, and the staff learn to care for her, help her heal, feed her, and watch her grow. She lives for 20 years in the aquarium, until the staff recognizes her need to be in the ocean. Readers follow Yoshi as she prepares for her return. Scientists attach a tracker to Yoshi and are able to follow her ocean travels. Much of Yoshi's ocean life is imagined, but Moore uses scientific knowledge to describe Yoshi's travels from Cape Town to the Indian Ocean and beyond, ultimately ending on the western coast of Australia. While Yoshi's life and journey are amazing, what makes this title extraordinary is the back matter. Maps, fact boxes, insets, and other text features detail and describe Yoshi's journey. The reader learns about ocean currents, ocean levels, and types of food and fish that Yoshi encountered before her tracker stopped working when she reached Australia in 2020. One spread shows the anatomy of a sea turtle, with detailed information including its life cycle, and another shows details about the ocean floor, ocean animals, currents, and levels. All this detail includes realistic illustrations that truly bring Yoshi to life using graphite, watercolor, drawing inks, conté crayon, and colored pencils. VERDICT Yoshi's incredible story, the collection of scientific information, and engaging illustrations will capture readers, encouraging inquiry and exploration through a sea turtle's eyes.-Susan Lissim
