Adapted for young readers! Join Olympic gold medalist, two-time Women’s World Cup champion, and trailblazing activist Megan Rapinoe in the fight for equality and justice in this middle grade adaptation of her New York Times bestselling memoir, One Life.

You know Megan Rapinoe as an international soccer superstar! She’s also a fierce activist, boldly speaking out about issues of equality and justice—from LGBTQ rights to the equal pay movement to Black Lives Matter.

In this adaptation for middle school readers of her memoir One Life, get to know Megan: from her childhood in a small California town where she learned to play soccer and how to fight for social justice; through high school, college and beyond; to 2016 when she became the first high-profile white athlete to take a knee in support of Colin Kaepernik, and also suing the United States Soccer Federation along with her teammates over gender discrimination.

Using stories from her own life and career, Rapinoe discusses the responsibility we have to speak up. In this edition specifically for young readers, she reveals the impact everyone, even kids, can have on their communities and how kids can get involved in making the world a better place.Black-and-white photographs.

Praise & Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Two-time World Cup soccer champion Rapinoe encourages a young audience to stand up and speak out against injustice in this adaptation of her memoir. Rapinoe chronicles her love for soccer from early childhood through her professional career. As kids, Rapinoe and her twin sister played soccer with boys' teams in Redding, CA, until they were able to travel to Sacramento where there were more competitive options for girls. Rapinoe weathered season-ending injuries and disagreements with coaches to become one of the best athletes in the world. Publicly coming out as lesbian began Rapinoe's involvement in activism. She became an important voice in the fight for marriage equality, and was one of the first athletes to "take a knee" during the National Anthem following the example of Colin Kaepernick and others. Rapinoe also became a vocal advocate for salary increases for female athletes. Sports lovers will relish action-packed scenes from the final minutes of championship games. Photographs from Rapinoe's life on and off the soccer pitch are featured between chapters. Younger readers may need to engage in discussion with adults regarding some of the topics in this memoir, including descriptions of violence against Black bodies at the hands of police and drug use by Rapinoe's older brother who struggled with addiction during her adolescence. VERDICT A recommended purchase, especially where memoirs with social justice themes are needed.-Allison Staley, Lake Oswego P.L., OR
