“Your organs eat blood and use it for fuel. Sickness comes from bad air. Radiation can cure everything from aches and pains to upset stomachs.” Once widely regarded as scientific facts, these are just a few of the outdated beliefs addressed in this engaging volume. Each of the eleven archaic theories has its own section, delineated by a different-colored background. The concepts range from extremely dated (bloodletting as a means of curing diseases) to fairly modern, but recently outdated (left brain vs. right brain binary when in reality both halves are utilized in most brain functions). Where relevant, period photographs and drawings appear alongside contemporary ones to contrast and highlight the differences in beliefs. Throughout, bolded vocabulary words are defined at the bottom of the page on which they appear. The main text is set in rounded ivory boxes, making the layouts striking and easy to follow. Back matter includes source notes, books and Web sites for further information, a link to educational resources from the publisher, and an index.

Series Review
Focusing on scientific misconceptions throughout the centuries, each compact volume reveals how scientists have debunked the erroneous claims of the past through persistence, further inquiry, and use of the scientific method. Concise narratives work well with photos and graphic images to convey the history of scientific thought while reminding readers that with advancements in science and technology, today’s facts could just as easily be proven inaccurate in the future. Captions and sidebars provide additional information and context, and many entries contain highlighted words that are briefly defined at the bottom of the page. Although each volume has its merits, Your Head Shape Reveals Your Personality! stands out due in large part to the subject matter—the human body—and its gross-out potential.
