Life is happy at the odinochka, the trading post where Erinia Pavaloff lives with her family in Russian Alaska. They fish, they sell goods, and when visitors come they play music and dance. But the Pavaloffs are creole-of mixed Russian and native heritage-and when the U.S. takes over Russian Alaska, big changes are in store for them.
