Milton Hershey may be most famous for his chocolate, but this approachable, small-format biography highlights his generosity toward his community. In the early 1900s, Milton Hershey helped create a town so his factory workers could live comfortably. Hershey, Pennsylvania, had “schools, stores, a park, and a zoo,” with more elaborate additions, including an amusement park, added by the 1930s. Hershey contributed in many other ways as well, such as donating much of his money to a school for boys and inventing a non-melting chocolate bar for World War II soldiers. Each of the spreads features a cumulative time line and a full-page historical image. The simple sentences, set in a large font size with plenty of white space, make this a good choice for emerging readers. Back matter consists of a glossary, critical thinking questions using the Common Core, suggested reading, a link to publisher-approved Web sites, and an index.
