Iliona and her family have just set sail from Greece to Egypt when pirates attack their ship. Suddenly, Iliona and her brother, Apollo, are orphans. Sold as slaves in Rome, the two children are both bought by Gaius Martius, a senator. This doesn't save them from being separated, however, as Iliona must work in the master's house, while Apollo becomes a laborer in the vineyards on the senator's faraway country estate. While she misses her brother terribly and hopes for their freedom, Iliona begins to enjoy the excitement of her new Roman life. Full-color illustrations.
