Spuds

No matter how hard Ma works, Maybelle and her younger brothers never have enough to eat. So they decide to help out-by sneaking into Mr. Kenney's field next door and digging up potatoes. Working by moonlight, they go "creepin' over the clawed-up earth, [their] hands feelin' for night spuds." But when they arrive home and empty their sacks on the kitchen floor, they're surprised by what they find. They didn't bring home spuds-they brought home stones!
