Summary An account of Abe Lincoln’s upbringing. Born to an impoverished, but hardworking father and loving mother, Abe and his sister Sarah are raised to value education and hard work. After being forced to leave his farm in Knob Creek, Thomas resettles the family in Indiana. When Abe is nine, Nancy dies, leading to a difficult period for the Lincoln children. To make things easier, Thomas decides to remarry, bringing home a widow named Sally. Sally takes over the house and makes it a home again, but Abe is slow to warm to his stepmother. Sally finally wins Abe’s affection by her insistence that Abe’s studies are more important than chores.
