The Internet

The Internet provides “information in a flash!” But how does it work? The path from typing a Web site’s address to seeing the site pop up on the screen is fairly involved—but very fast. This easy-to-follow overview of the Internet is full of useful information (“every device in a network has its own address,” called an IP, or internet protocol, address; protocols are “common rules that all computers follow so that information can be requested and sent.”). The attractive design employs clear, helpful visuals including large color photographs, diagrams, labels, and a table of common Internet abbreviations. Occasional text boxes offer interesting tidbits: “Not all of the pieces [of information] travel the same path to your device. They go whichever way is easiest.” Front matter contains word count, vocabulary, and “Before & After Reading Activities,” while back matter consists of Internet safety tips, a photo glossary, Web sites to visit, and an index.
