The White Elephant

Run-Run is a mahout, an elephant trainer. He and his beloved old elephant, Walking Mountain, keep themselves in coins and food by clearing stumps and carrying river water to their hot, dry Siamese village. But one day, Run-Run and Walking Mountain have the misfortune to offend a powerful prince, accidentally drenching him in river water. The prince decides to punish Run-Run with a gift that is also a curse: a sacred white elephant. Black-and-white illustrations.
