Tricking the Tallyman

The villagers of Tunbridge, Vermont, have heard bad news about the upcoming census: "The more people he counts, the more money our town will have to pay." So when Phineas Bump, Assistant Marshal of the United States of America, rides into Tunbridge, he receives a cold welcome: "Begone, Tallyman. For we are a town that won't be counted." Indeed, except for the stubborn Mrs. Pepper, Tunbridge seems to be empty of citizens. But "count them [Phineas] must and count them [he] will." Introduction. Author's note.
