Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1861: When Lizzie's favorite cousin, Rosanna, moves to town from Richmond, Virginia, Lizzie is happy. Before long, however, things change. Lizzie's father and twin brother join the Union army, meaning she must manage the family's shop and give up her dream of attending school. Lizzie and Rosanna argue about abolition; then Rosanna runs away to Richmond, marries, and follows her husband onto the battlefield. As Rosanna nurses Confederate soldiers and Lizzie prepares for the battle coming to Gettysburg, both girls realize that not only is the fate of the country at stake, but so are the fates of their families and friendship.
