Yatandou

Eight-year-old Yatandou lives in Mali. She loves caring for her pet goat Sunjata, but doesn't like spending each afternoon helping the women of her village pound kernels into meal. She anxiously awaits the arrival of a machine that will grind the millet. How soon will it come? she asks her mother. "Not until the women in our village have enough money," her mother says. Yantandou's mother sells onion balls to raise money; her grandmother sells water jars. But the only thing Yatandou can sell is Sunjata. Full-color paintings.
