The Bone Garden

By: Heather Kassner

Illustrator: Matt Saunders

Irréelle fears she’s not quite real. Only the finest magical thread tethers her to life—and to Miss Vesper. But for all her efforts to please her cruel creator, the thread is unraveling. Irréelle is forgetful as she gathers bone dust. She is slow returning from the dark passages beneath the cemetery. Worst of all, she is unmindful of her crooked bones.

When Irréelle makes one final, unforgivable mistake, Miss Vesper threatens to imagine her away once and for all. Desperate, Irréelle flees to the underside of the graveyard and embarks on an adventure to unearth the magic that breathes bones to life, even if it means she will return to dust and be no more. With echoes of The Graveyard Book, Heather Kassner crafts a spooky story humming with magic and mystery.

After making an unforgivable mistake, Iréelle escapes to the tunnels below the graveyard, where she meets Guy, also created by Miss Vesper. Together with her first-ever friend, she tries to find a mysterious unmarked grave, hoping that if she completes a mission for Miss Vesper she might be given the reward of a full, human life. However, as Guy and Iréelle search, they come to realize that their benefactress might be keeping more secrets than just having a cold heart and a few supernatural abilities. More gothic than gory, the story is a small-scale adventure with big stakes for each of the young heroes. Iréelle, Guy, and the newly created Lass are intrepid and easy to support in their attempts to free themselves from whatever bond holds them to Miss Vesper. She, a truly villainous villainess, uses many abusive tricks to keep her dependents bent to her will. The writing is focused and never deviates from the pull of the plot, though it occasionally veers toward overexplanation. It’s a thrilling read, with bone-chilling descriptions and enough ghastly moments to keep even the bravest young readers shivering—and entertained.
