Children of the Holocaust
This unflinching portrayal will be of value to all students of World War II history, as it details the sad, horrible experiences of some of the war’s often-overlooked victims, but it is a particularly suitable companion to a reading of The Diary of Anne Frank. A preface chronicles the rise of Hitler and Nazism, and the rest of the book intersperses first-hand accounts of child survivors with a history of the war at large. Some relatively hopeful aspects of the children’s lives are covered, such as the Kindertransport in which they were removed from harm, and the hiding of many in non-Jewish homes. Overall, though, the book, especially in its many period photographs and its chapter on “Surviving the Death Camps,” is an important resource that recounts for today’s students the horrors that these children endured.
