For years cousins Dylan and Rio have wanted to paddle the lower canyons of the river together, and despite several snafus (about which their parents know little), the two take off alone on their much-anticipated journey. Who knew that Hurricane Dolly would come this far inshore and raise the river to heights not known in years, making the water treacherous, testing their skills at every turn? And who knew that the supposed coyote they encounter on the trip is not bringing an undocumented child to his mother but instead working with a drug cartel kidnapping a judge’s son in exchange for leverage with Mexican law enforcement? Hobbs includes plenty of action, both on and off the river, but also manages to share the beauty of Big Bend country without interfering with the story’s trajectory. He portrays the fourteen- and fifteen-year-old boys as confident, knowledgeable, and disciplined, leaving little doubt that they will survive, yet builds in nail-biting (and page-turning) suspense along the way.
